A new microscope sheds insight into the neural basis of congenital sensory abnormalities.

Precise connections between cortical hemispheres are crucial for sensory perception. Aberrant wiringacross hemispheres underlies sensory deficits seen in neurodevelopmental disorders.

Kavli NDI PI, Patrick Kanold and team, developed a widefield microscope, capable of imaging neuronal activity, across large areas of the brain. Using this microscope, the team has shown that the two hemispheres of the auditory cortex, whiletopographically similar, show functional differences due to asymmetric connection. This study has clinical significance in the treatment of congenital deafness
